I played on and off for about 10 years, went through a bunch of different basses and other instruments, recorded some godawful music, and eventually gave it up to pursue other things.
Now my 17 year old nephew is in a band. He has a really bottom of the barrel cheap bass, but he likes playing. he's been playing sax for years already, so I know he has the aptitude. I wanted to make him a decent semi-custom for a graduation present next year. By semi, I mean to buy a halfway decent bass, retop it and upgrade the hardware/pups. While searching around for info I found this forum. I ended up getting an older Ibanez SR400 with a natural maple body. Now that I've started playing it, I don't want to part with it. I'm hooked. This time I'm more interested in learning to really play well and develop my skill, less in joining a band or writing my own songs. That may come later. Nephew will still get when he graduates, but I'll replace it with and upgrade of my own when the time comes.
Sorry for the long intro but that's my story.

Welcome back to the land of the fat string.

I myself play a soundgear sr400 and have enjoyed its tones and playability for 5 yrs. Mine has had a hammering so I to have taken the liberty to respray it with a custom airbrush paint job although it is beyond my budget to revamp the setup. Though I find the setup is quite atractive.
I know how you feel when you picked up the sr400, particlulary with a good set of strings. The action and punch it gives is nothing short of funky and PHat. I too picked up my friends bass and couldnt wait for him to sell it too me. 400 bucks later it was mine and after 2 yrs of solid gigging I quit music for a while and put the bass away.
Just like yourself I have been on hiatus, and believe it or not tomorrow I will be restringing it for its first jam in 3yrs. I am excited, it will be like picking it up for the fisrt time again, I love its full scale neck and fat punch tone.
Like your own motives of picking up the bass again I too have returned to playing the instrument with a more professional aproach , honing in on dexterity, scales and proper habits, as I used be a fret smasher in my heavy metal days. It wasnt uncommon to have my hands bleeding after a gig from smashing the frets with my fist.
Anyways, keep us updated with ur progress
Cheers for ur story mate.
kindest regards
