Serious Question Here

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello I am new to this forum. I have played bass about 9 years off and on. I am writing because I need some advice on slapping. I feel like I am a very good bassist, however when i try to slap it just sounds bad. Are there any good instructional vids or anything. I have a 95 pedulla jazz mvp bass, an 89 fender precision and a newer ibanez. The ibanez seems to get better pop than the other two but having played for as long as I have i never really tried to learn slap just practised solely on standard playing. Anyways I know how to slap It just sounds weak I guess is how I would describe it. Also I can play pretty fast but when I try to slap a fast line it just does not sounds right. I know this is not being very specific and without hearing me would be hard to judge but I want to get better to become a more complete player. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

There's a really good (but old) Video out there by Louis Johnson from The Brothers Johnson.

He goes through a series of licks slowly and then increases speed until you can't see his hands anymore. I thought I would never be able to play the licks, but playing along with the video, I was able to get them pretty much right, although never as fast as Louis Johnson.

It may be on DVD now, but I got the video years ago. Larry Graham also has some instructional stuff out there.

I am not a fan of slap and pop anyway, but certainly admire artists like Johnson, Graham and Miller when they let rip.

Hope you can find something.

There's always Youtube
