stuck in a rut

Sign in to disble this ad
hey guys, new to the forums obviously. just wanted to say hello to everyone. i kinda started playing the bass on a whim. i had messed around with this kids bass before and i liked the sound but never really thought about picking it up. then my 2 friends picked up the guitar and had been playing for 2 months. they were getting on me about playing the bass so they took me to guitar center and after looking around and kinda messing with some different basses, i just bought the schecter 004. so it's been 1 year and 5 months since then and i haven't taken any lessons, self taught if you will. kinda in a rut now as i don't see myself progressing. suggestions? anyways sorry for the long intro, please don't be too hard on me.

Welcome! Read the following, some of this might work for you! Not everyone is going to jump into lessons, and I took a free one yesterday
(Buy a bass, take a free lesson).

Told him I would take 3-4 weeks to prepare for the 2nd lesson, and pay/take lessons for a month, and then take a break for woodsheddin'...

He suggested that I choose a couple of songs, and we would work on them in the next lesson or longer. Going to learn the first 30 seconds or more of the song if possible, look at a lesson or someone playing the two songs on youtube, or other online vids. There's lots of aids out there for you-tab (not real difficult if you practice with it on easier songs first). Told him I was going to use tab, and sheet music-the whole enchilada. I already have Guitar Pro software (works for bass, too). Try it free for 30 days. You can study a piece of a song, it will display them on the neck in slow motion if you select the option, great tool.
The songs:

1. Gimme Three Steps by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

2. Money by Pink Floyd.

The instructor wants to help with wrist, hand, thumb positions for both hands, keeping the bass approx. in the same spot whether in-lap, or strapped and standing.

Have fun!
