hello my fellow musicians. im a 15 year drummer who has been sidelined by cervical fusion. ive always played the bass and i am now taking it on full time. I have a 6-8 month recovery time and the doc says no drums. So here i am straight from the drummers forum to hang out and learn from my other half...the low end ive played along with, around and over. im looking forward to hanging out with yall and i hope to learn a thing or two as im sure there are some smokin players that hang out here.

'...my other half...'
Ya gotta like that. Welcome- sorry to hear of your condition. At least you're not a recovering guitarist! J/K- welcome.

Edit: I'm a dork- I said 'welcome' twice. I mean 3 times...

thanks...and no guitar playing for this guy. 4 strings for a drummer is enough. i must say - i am really enjoying the bass. i still get to groove, but in a whole different way. its kinda nice.

Hello in5funk.
First of all, I am sorry to learn of your condition. I am also a drummer who once fractured his spine. I dealt with this by checking out the many percussive possibilities that exist. And my journey not only lasted through my recovery, but stays with me to this day. I now work as both a professional drummer and as a percussionist.

I think playing bass is a great idea. So don't wish to come across as anti that. But if you are already a rhythmatist, you might like to check out instruments such as classical tambourine, pandeiro, bata drums, frame drums, cuica and so on and so forth.

I found out, all those years ago, that when I returned to the kit, I was a far better and more musical drummer than I'd ever been before.

It's worth thinking about.

I wish you all the best in your recovery.

i hear what you are saying. i broke out the old zylaphone and set up the jam blocks just for kicks. i have no plans to let go of drumming...its all i know and seeing how ive worked with the bass very closy over the years it seemed like a low impact approach to keeping the music juices flowing. i think as you know its more the need to be creative. As i start getting my strength back im sure ill grab the black panther and the hot rods and start chopping away. i do enjoy the bass tho...its funny what you think you know about an instrument until you sit down to get serious. the little major/minor scales i know have become boring and ive moved on to other things and damn its not easy...but when ya catch that new groove on the bass it is sweet. thanks for the kind words.

No problem.

I think playing bass will also help you. Steve Jordan seems to think it helped him immensely.

Good luck again.

I'm primarily a drummer too....nearly 30 years. Just LOVIN' playin' Bass more these days....nearly 3 years.

I understand that you can pick certain notes to correspond to the various parts of the drumkit....& play bass that way--like a drummer.
I'm not good enough yet to apply that to my playing...but it sounds cool to me.

thanks...music is music and you either breathe it or you dont. im not sure i could pick up the bass without prior knowledge of the instrument...hell ive been plucking away at the bass for years just never took it serious...it was for those other people. but hell i love it now and wish i would have had my own, even if it just sat in the studio. Its funny how my ear has shifted to the bass when im listening to music...the drums seem so distant now.
