Hey everybody, I'm Dave Walker. I'm new to TalkBass. Here's a little about me.
I've been a guitar player for about 11 years and I started playing bass at church a few years ago because we had a couple of guitar players and the music director said "Hey Walker, why don't you learn bass?" So, I played a borrowed bass for a couple of years just using what I knew from the bottom four strings on my guitar. Then, last year, a friend asked me if I could fill in for his bass player on a "high profile gig". I agreed, thinking he was joking about the high profile part. As it turns out, it was a wedding. A Texas State Representative's kid was marrying a very well-known eye surgeon's kid. It was high profile. So, over the next six weeks, the regular bass player, who has been playing since before my parents met, put me through boot camp. He also loaned me his Vintage White '84 American Jazz to practice and play the gig with - very cool. So, that was it for me. I'm a bass player now.
I finally purchased my first bass a few weeks ago. It's a Mexican Standard Jazz special run with a flamed maple top, tobacco sunburst finish and parchment pickguard. I'll be replacing the bridge with a Leo Quan B.A.II, the pickups probably with Fender Vintage Noiseless or Lindy Fralins (but I'm open to suggestions) and maybe, eventually, a Warmoth neck. I'm also thinking about rockin' the series parallel push/pull conversion. I've been reading some threads about that.
So, that's me. I'm looking forward to getting to know everybody and picking your brains as I perfect my bass and grow as a player. |
