I'm very new to the bass world-eight months-and stuck to reading various threads around here. I used to hang out at the tdpri forum before but since picking up bass last August I've come to enjoy this place a little more.

I joined a band in September in the hopes of learning quickly and it worked! There was a big learning curve between me and the others in the band at first. Coming from a guitar background I was playing with melody carrying notes rather than as a backbone/rhythmic thinking. I had no clue what "locking in" with a drummer meant. This forum taught me how to listen and think like a bass player- listening to drummer, highlighting the other members and getting the groove that makes the audience dance. In my case, getting the NYC audience to nod their head to the music.

Before picking up bass I never noticed the bass player in songs. Now I can appreciate their job in a band a lot more and can hear what's lacking in songs that don't have a good mix of bass or just don't have it.
