Want to learn bass

I figure this would be a better place to post something like this than going to all the other forums and posting is this the best whatever to start with. Like the title says I want to learn the bass, I like the idea of being the supporting member of a band rather than the spotlight. Unfortunately I am on a budget of about $400 to get everything I need, bass, amp, books, all that fun stuff. I am looking at getting:

Ibanez GSR200
Peavey MAX 158 Bass Practice Combo
Hal Leonard Electric Bass Method

that puts me at around $300-350 depending where I get all of it from. The book because almost everyone here seems to swear by it as a great way to get started. I just need a little amp for now since I don't really plan on getting into a band anytime soon. The bass well I went into GC and was just picking the basses up and feeling which one felt good and the Ibanez did.

I guess I want to learn an instrument because when I was little my parents made me take lessons and I am irked at myself that I didn't stick with them. Plus I get insomnia a couple times a week and I figure if I am going to stay up might as well do something productive and work, tv, games, all that stuff gets old after about 5 hours of it.

Have you tried looking at Musician's Friend in the sale category? I got a really nice guitar there. I live in a very rural area so there aren't any good music stores around. I end up buying a lot of stuff online. You could also try craigslist.
