Well I guess this is my intro to "TalkBass"
Found ya while surfin the web for knowledge and information related to bass playing, equipment and such.
Sorry if this may be a little long....but....
I'm fresh off the boat when it comes to playing any type of musical instrument. Now my two younger son's are a different story and they are the reason I'm hooked. My son's aged 13 and 16 are both quite musically inclined. The oldest plays the piano, violin and electric guitar. Quite gifted to say the least. My youngest son plays the piano and drums. Both love "ROCK" and classic rock at that.. seems it’s all coming around in a circle. They and most of their friends love the classics and want to know as much as about it as they can soak up.
So when they ask questions like.."Hey dad who plays that or who is that by" I do my best to answer and then go dig it up on tape/cd and yes even vinyl... we crank it up and listen. They listen to it till the figure out how to play it, and then do so quite well.
Now I try to stay involved in my boy's life’s as much as I can and as much as they let me. They love music and so do I, it’s one of the things we share together on a level basis, and at that point it’s like best friends hanging out.... To be more involved and cause I've always liked electric guitars in one form or another, I picked up the bass, love the rhythm and sound of a bass.... just started taking lessons.. My sons think it’s the greatest thing.. He is always asking if he can help me and if I have any questions, I ask them questions and they readily pipe up with an answer... It was funny when my oldest son was instructing me on proper form and how to hold my hand, what notes where what and such.... It gave me great pride and I'm sure it’s good for them also.
So that we will always have this together I'm learning.....
My simple equipment for now is a Johnson JP-080 and an old fender Frontman 15B amp.... I tried picking up a few other brands of basses at local shops... although I can't play squat (yet).. For some reason this short scale P-Bass felt real comfortable... If I need something better in the future I plan on just switching out pieces and parts to make this one sound like I want... Sure I could go buy a more expensive brand or model... But I'm hard headed and I like the under-dogs. I like tinkering with all types of gear.... so it’s a challenge and an opportunity to learn.....
Hope this wasn't too long winded....
