What advice for a new starter

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi. I've been playing guitar for 30 years or so. Never played anywhere, but loads of jams and home recording.

Now, I've got the chance to play in a band - but as a BASS player. We're a four piece, drums, keys and two guitarists - so I have volunteered to play bass as I own some bass gear.

I've got a USA Precision, A Hohner B2A stick bass, a Line 6 X3 live, two Atomic reactors and a 700 watt Roland PA. I've got the sound nailed down in my home studio and can make enough volume miked up (or not) to fill most small to medium gigs.

Ready to take it to the rehearsals and beyond - playing things like Red House, other blues, some pop and MOR rock.

What advice would any of you give me?

Re-posting this in the BG forum would be a good start.

Playing wise: keep it simple (use the root, chord tones, scale, and chromatic scale in that order until you get GOOD), give the guitarists the right of way (keys and drummer you can fight for position with within reason), and LISTEN (some people don't).

Are you looking for advice on playing or Gear?
Playing:+1 for colcifer, also just listen to the bass players on the songs/albums that you and your band plays and use their lines as guidelines for what you play, and just try to keep out of the frequency of the keyboards. Gearwise: you seem to have a pretty good size. just Practice, Practice, Practice!

Well...I am a newbie here and have no idea of executing what first and what next. Hope for better ideas in future for your question. Thanks for sharing with us.
