Yet another newbie

Hey y'all,

I'm from Maysville, Ky., a nice little Ohio River town about an hour from Cincinnati.

Here are my questions. Is it too late for me (I'm soon to be 52) to learn to play the bass? Should I learn it left-handed (I'm left-handed, but my right baby finger is mostly numb because of a childhood accident)? How much should I expect to spend on the instrument/amp/lessons?
