G&L Bass ForumAddicts of Leo Fender's latest basses welcome here, as well as those interested in what drives the addiction to the basses from Fender Avenue.
The 4+1 were built in the 97/98 time frame I believe. They were supposedly heavy as h*ll as they were ash bodies. Also the bridge was not thru body.
In the 99ish time frame, they switched to the 3+2. At that time they went to the string thru bridge and started using basswood for the body backs. They would then put ash or quilted maple tops over the basswood on many of the upgrade models. The basswood backs helped to reduce weight.
I had a basswood / maple top L2.5K that I used to think would have been better had it been an ash body. After owning an ash body L2K Tribute, I think the basswood / maple top had a much thicker sound that I prefer. Too bad I sold it. I also find the string spacing a little tight on the L-2500. For me, Sadowsky was the way to go for a fiver. But the L-2500 is a darn fine bass and the string spacing allows for very fast finger style. It is switching back to the 3/4" four string that gets weird.
