2008 SB-2 now with old style metal pickguard ???

I had the pleasure of playing a brand new SB-2 at a small dealer today. 3 tone sunburst - maple board. But I was surprised to see an old style crinkle black metal pickguard on it. Like the early 90's had. Last I knew all they offered was black or tortoise guards. Is this new. I think it's great.

Also it seemed the bridge pickup had a lot more volume to it than prior SB-2's. Anyone...? The difference in tone variations was dramatic compared to my past SB-2 experiences. I wonder if they boosted the bridge pickups output?

I was on my way home from an early Saturday morning GC trip. I figured maybe I could get there at opening and find one of those amazing deals at GC that everyone talks about. (no luck). After an hour of playing decent..ok..nothing special... Fenders I stopped into this small music shop on the way home. Boy...after playing those Fenders you really get a direct comparison of the G&L quality!!

The SB-2 volume pots turned with a smooth, slight resistance of quality. The pickup routing was close tolerence to the pickup. The tuners were a lot like the Hipshots used on the US Laklands except they were aluminum post and short peg shafts. Man!! the finish was glass and flawless!! WHen I asked how much I expected to hear a price like $1100-$1250 , much like the Fenders down the road at GC. But $995 was his answer and boy did it get my wheels turning. Since it wasn't quite optioned the way I wanted we talked for awhile about price on ordering what I wanted......now I can't stop thinking about it

This is from a while back before I replaced the bridge pick up with an MFD.
