No, if anything I think they may lack a bit of "grunt" and sound a bit more precise in the lower registars. The problem is that people are usually comparing apples to oranges when trying to compare basswood to other wood types unless you can find another high quality bass made of basswood to try. The ones that come to mind for me are the MTD kingston and the G&L L2500. I also have a Basswood/maple topped SRX505 that colors my opinion on basswood. Here'as a sound sample of it:

Definately not "spongy" to my ears.

That's a very interesting sound clip. It does sound tight and focused enough. I guess it all boils down to build quality.
