Your bass, your money.

You want to knock the bejesus out of any potential resale value go ahead. The heart and soul of most G&L basses are the MFD pickups. If you don't like it and cannot return it to stock you will not get beans if you sell compared to stock. Unless it is a bass you will never get rid of, do not do an irreversible change to a G&L.

I've been hanging with G&L fans a long time. Trust me there is no "popular" replacement pickup, just ones that fit.

Its yr bass. If a little experimenting with new pickups will inspire you and give you the tonal vibe you're looking for; then go for it. For me, I'd say that Climax has its own vibe that works well for what it is and might likely be diminished if routed out and fitted with additional or replacement pick ups. If the Climax isn't working for you, then I'd suggest selling it and getting one that does. If G&L is your thing, then get a L2000, you'll have two pickups. If vintage is J bass growl is your thing, then there is the JB bass or even an SB-2. If the domestic models are a bit too pricey; there's always the Tributes. You have options. However if carving up that Climax is what will float your boat...well...it is your boat, after all.
