Anybody put tapewounds on an ASAT/L2000/L2500?

Has anybody tried tapewounds on a G&L with double MFD pickups? I am still searching for the magic string with qualities of both flat wounds and round wounds.

The bass player on early Joe Jackson records played a P-bass with tape wounds and he had a really nice punchy tone. You can search on the song "Sunday Papers" on Youtube and check it out.

Let me know your impression of tape wounds on your G&L.

Peace . . . .

That Graham Maby sound is great--must've been pretty darn new tapewounds. I was just listening to Get Sharp the other day . . .

never tried tapes on my L2500, but I've used them on P's. I love the sound but frankly had intonation issues with those strings, so I gave up on 'em. That top end like Maby's didn't last long with them either, they mellowed into killer dub territory pretty quickly. Very quickly actually.

IMHO, the "magic string with qualities of both flat wounds and round wounds" would have to be Chromes. They're my "rock" flats, while I use Labellas for my, uh, "flat" flats
Chromes on my L2500 sounded GREAT.

labella tapewounds are one of the most musical sounding strings i've ever heard. i had a set on an L-1500 a looooong time ago. it mellowed the sound out while still giving a chunky p-bass slap crunch, surprisingly enough. why don't i use those strings anymore? i don't know. i don't know...

TAPEWOUNDS strings are nylon strings.....i guess. If i'm right, could you slap these strings and does it sound more like flats or round....And you use tapewounds on what bass and for what style of playing/music? thanks

Francis

Thanks for the responses so far folks. I play a variety of pop styles in a praise band.

The versatility of the G&L is great in this environment. Tone-wise I like the strong fundamental of flat wounds. (TI flats on the L-2500) and the modern, occasionally slap-able tone of rounds (TI Super Alloys on the ASAT).

If there were such a string that provided the best of these two strings, I would love to try them.

Also, I have tried Chromes on the ASAT and liked them quite a bit, but not quite as much as the TI flats. To me, they are reasonably bright for a flat and they posses the best qualities of a flat but they are still "just flats" and lack the slap-able nature of rounds.

I like the 760n tapes on my L2000, but I don't slap. FYI Carvin has em for cheap! I'm strictly a finger picker from the blues and 60's and 70's rock zone.

I've been thinking about the D'Addario half rounds for this very same reason, but I'd like to try them first before messing with my perfectly set up L2500. Anyone tried the half rounds?

I tried half rounds and did not like them. TI Jazz flats do what I expected from the half rounds and more.

Well, I do sometimes...

Actually, I really don't understand why people say you can't slap flatwounds. Just don't expect them to sound zingy like Marcus, but old-school like Larry. I bet Thank You was slapped with flats!

Roto Tru-bass strings sound great on a SB-1.

Big, W I D E Macca-type sound, that went really well along with acoustic guitars when I experimented with them.

Inspired by this, I then strung up a JB-2 with 'em. Sounded like total ass.

MFD's seem to make all strings sound nice, I guess.
