Bass cut and treble cut

I was told the bass and treble are cuts on the G&L L-2000 and L-2500. Does this mean that the "default" position for them is all the way up and that will put them at even output with the mids?

All the way up is totally flat since they are cut only.

The bass and treble controls are prior to the preamp and therfore cut only as spideyjg said. This is why they can still work in passive mode unlike most other active basses. The preamp on the G&L acts more like a line amp/boost than a tone shaper and is especially handy for long instrument cable runs. The odd thing is the natural output of the G&L pups are so hot, they are about the LAST pups that need a line level boost.

It should be added that they are passive cut knobs- the "Treble Cut " is just a normal tone knob like found on most passive basses. The bass cut knob is basically the opposite. They don't work like active EQ adjustments because active EQs are generally +/- at a certain frequency, whereas a passive cut changes the character/amount of all frequencies above or below a certain frequency.

This means that the G&L tone pots will have a drastic effect on the character of your tone that most actives couldn't touch- what makes them so versatile.
