I can't remember the last time I had such bad GAS!

I've always been curious about G&Ls but never had the chance to give them a whirl. I did a month or two ago, but I wasn't impressed, and at this point I'm chopping it up to a poor setup (which lead me to not bother plugging it in).

After looking through the "SHOW YOUR G&L'S!!!!" thread, I went to Manny's and Rudy's here in NYC last night and tested a few out, and I was blown away. Playing through a Eden Nemesis combo (which certainly doesn't hurt), I was able to get about every tone I could ever want out of one bass! There was one in particular I was digging: semi-hollow 4-string ASAT with an trans orange finish and maple fingerboard. If I only had $1400 to drop

Since I'm in a dire need of a decent bass, I may purchase a Tribute L2K to tide me over for a while before I can justify ordering a new USA model.

My checkbook exclaims: "Damn you all!"

Go back in and plug into that Nemesis again. Set the EQ section flat and the Enhance knob to about 1:30. Compression on, Para-EQ out. Set the Gain until it just glows faintly when you hit your hardest notes. Turn up the Master until you can feel it a bit. Now stand back and try out that G & L preamp system. I have found that those settings on my Nemesis with my ASAT will allow me to do just about any gig just by switching my bass' controls.

Now if you really want GAS plug it into a Boogie 400+ set at about "8".

haha will do.. Whenever I test out a bass at a store, I always set the EQ to flat, gain to about midway, and turn off any-and-all sound-coloring doodads. I didn't mess with compression this last time, but I'll try it out.

On my thoughts of buying a Tribute: the 4-stringers only come with the 1.75" neck, correct? I'm almost certain all the models I tried out last night had the 1.5" neck. I don't know how I'd like the wider nut width. I did play a 5-string at Rudy's, and thought the neck was fine, but that's because it was a 5-string. My opinion there might change when there's one less string.

Is there a way of telling through the serial numbers what neck a G&L has?
