Yeah, probably some difference with the finishing, but that doesn't affect the sound and that's what it is about. Thought I wouldn't like the thick neck--my two basses are about as far from each other in terms of the neck as they could possibly get--but I have grown to love the thick, substantial feel of the Trib L2500.

Put the rest of the money in the bank and play on!
Yep. I have no issue buying a Tribute. My L2500 is well put together and sounds great. A USA model would be nice and having an option of neck sizes would be cool too (even though I am fine with the L2500 Tribby neck), Im not sure it would be worth it IMHO. Oh and I couldnt get my walnut stain on a USA, so that cinches the deal for me. Of course this all depends on if I decide to sell the Ric or the wife Ok's another bass and Ill just keep the Ric and buy a L2000 too.

About 3 years ago I had a Ric 4003, a Warwick Thumb 6 and a Hohner Steinberger 5 string copy - I picked up a Tribute L2500 (as a backup) and loved it so much I sold it and my ric to buy a US L2500 (wanted the gold flake finish). Then later I picked up a Tribute L2000 as my 4 string 'backup'.

I liked the Ric, but found the tone on the G&L's so much more versatile.

Sorry, but there are no neck dimension options for G&L 5 string basses - USA or Tribute. You can choose your fingerboard wood with the USA, but that's it.

I know... I keep raining on your parade. Sorry.

I love my RIC 4003, but it doesn't have anything over a G&L L-2000 for versatility. The RIC is a fantastic bass, but it is -- well -- different. Mine stays in the bass closet 99% of the time, but every so often, I pull it out and carry it to a gig and its fun for an evening. Then, reality strikes and i end up going back to a G&L and forgetting about the RIC.

RICs frustrate me with their archaic bridge which makes setting intonation a PITA , the oddball pickup cover / hole, and the crazy dual truss rods that frequently suck the life out of the open E if they're not tuned together. Reminds me of doing a tune-up on an old British car with multiple carburetors...Gotta get each one right and then both in synch together.

I say hang onto the RIC for when you need something different; appreciate it for what it is and enjoy it when you feel like a change.

Hey, who says that Rickenbacker is the rock bass? That title has long belonged to G&L. The L-2000 provides a more rockin' tone than any other bass, because no matter how you set it, it has a bit of a rock n' roll growl (unless you go bottom/bottom/top and cut the low-end).

If I were you, I'd save that bass for your kid. Who knows, maybe in 10-20 years, it'll be worth much more because it's a "vintage" instrument.
