Do New MIA G&L's still have "beauty mark" ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone,

Well things are looking better on my G&L Dream Bass quest. I have made "via dealer contact" with the good folks on Fender Ave. Now, it's a matter of me scatching up the coin and then the approx. four month gestation period will begin. Hopefully, my new L2K baby will come to Papa by the end of this year. I'm already like and I haven't even locked the deal yet. Go figure. Anyways, the question is. Has anyone purchased a Newer G&L (say made in 2007) and do they still have their characteristic Brown Dot on the rear of the headstock? I think I read somewhere that due to changes by G&L in recent years; changes in the neck design and neck manufacturing processes (going to CNC) that "the little signature brown dot" on the rear of the neck may have gone away, thus yet another footnote to Mr. Fender's history. My thought was that they would keep it if for no other reason than to differentiate the MIA necks from those finely crafted in other parts of the world. Does anyone know?

Wish they would bring back the Gold hardware...oh well. All that glitters IS gold when you properly align your peception, huh?...It's All Good!

Thanks again

Can't answer your question yet. I ordered my custom L2K 3.5 months ago, so hopefully I'll know soon.

If everything goes allright (knock on wood), I'll be able to tell you by the end of next week. But someone in the know should have come around by then...

I heard they kept the dot out of nostalgic reasons, though.

What did you order? Anything fancy?

#8 Fretted Neck
Bird's Eye Maple Fingerboard
Premium Quilted Maple Top
Cherryburst Finish

It should look similar to this L-2500:

What is the point of the "beauty mark?" A mounting point during manufacturing?

Anyone have a picture of this beauty mark?

Hmm.. I thought all G&L's were CNC since the early 90's.

I guess they leave the mark their for sentimental reasons or something.

I just had a neck replaced under warranty (got it back about 2 weeks ago) and there is a beauty mark. In fact it's bigger than the one on the original neck...

I bought this bass after it was used in the G&L booth at Summer NAMM 2007. It is a CNC process instrument and, as you can see, has the pin dot.

Jimtoonz,

Awesome pic's of a real Beauty. Let me wipe off some serious G&L drool here. I'm glad to see that their keeping their mark. My anticipation continues to build momentum.
Am I correct in my thinking that one would not find the beauty mark on any Tribby's and that there markings are in fact exclusive to ones built on Fender Ave?

Nice! Mine has one too (2004 or 2005) - & it is part of the character of the bass.

Thanks All,

For your responses, I think I have my answer. Although the mysterious reason for the mark itself remains afoot. Gotta Love it.

Horny toad,

Looking forward to seeing pic's of your new G&L when she arrives. My Dream Bass (L2K)will have the Quilted Maple top as well (I like the depth) but in Clear Blue with a little body binding (hopefully on the lighter side to blend) with a #8 GOT Maple FB neck. Thinking already about having the outside single coil mod added after the fact but obviously I will have plenty of time to mull that over for sure.

Thanks again,

If I may ask, what was the manufacturing process of USA G&L's before the recent change? Were they entirely handmade? Are they currently entirely made by machines?
