DR Hi Beam Flats and the SB-1

I love the thump of flats on the SB-1.

Many thanks to Harry, "Hmagman".

He fixed me up with a set of the DR Hi Beam Flats to put on the SB-1.

The Hi Beam Flats are stainless steel wound.

The Gauges: 45-65-85-105. Gold colored silk on the tuners. Silk on the Balls.

The G string was only long enough to wrap 3 times on the post.

The others required a trim to fit the posts.

May be a problem with string through the body basses.

I sent DR a note on the short G string.

Well...enough about the strings physical descriptions.

Comparisons below are my experiences with different brands of strings on SB-1s with the "splitter" pickup.

The DRs have a supple feel like TI Jazz Flats.

Not loose feeling like the TI JFs.

Not as tight as the D'Ad Chromes, or the high tension Roto 77LEs.

The DRs aren't as woody sounding as the TI JFs. First impression. May change as they settle.

The DRs sound warmer than the D'Ad Chrome flats.

DRs are warmer, but not as bright as the Roto flats. The Roto 77s are the brightest flat I've tried.

TECH

DRs didn't require a truss rod adjust, unlike the D'Ads, and the high tension Rotos.

I'll let them settle a few days, check the neck relief, and set the intonation.

The neck relief did not change, going from the TI SAs to the DRs.

The relief is very minimal, to almost flat.

Might tweak the micro-tilt up a half turn to lower the action a little bit.

Hope this helps someone shopping for the string brands mentioned above.

Jamie

DR Strings, Mfg Reply

DR Strings, Mfg Reply "Regarding your question, all of our strings should be the same length.
Our strings should fit any string through body bass.
If you have any other questions or need anything please contact..."
