DR strings for L2500?

Sign in to disble this ad
Im off to a gig and just no time to search right now maybe when I get home late tonite I might have a reply here. I was wondering what DR Nickel strings do I need to get to fit my L2500 thru body? Or is there a better brand of nickel to put on this bass? Playing alota motown, disco-funk, r&b style in one band and TX country in another. I like flats but dont know if they will cut the pop/slap I need in the one band. Just got this bass used awhile ago and dont know whats on there, the strings look like rounds with black cloth wrapping, they sound pretty awesome but rounds really trash my fingers. Off to the gig thanks for any suggestions y'all. Peace.

I'm not sure that DR makes a 5-string nickel set in "super long", which is what you will need to go through the body. I checked their online catalog, and didn't see the super longs in that line, but the catalog could be out of date.

The issue you run into is that even a lot of "long scale" strings will not make the run through the body. I have tried this before and ended up with the taper hitting on the nut.

I am pretty sure that you can find what you need by D'addario. They have a couple of nickel super long offerings in the line.

Cool, thanks...

Well appreciate the reply, just back from gig, tired, gotta big outdoor gig Saturday evening. Anyway, yeah, I had this happen with another 35" scale bass, bridge strung, where some Chrome flat, extra longs were a bit too long for that bass. I just wanted to try some DR's but I guess I can try them on my SR5. I'll look into those D'ad's long scale nickels. So any other brand of nickels anyone here use on their L2500 for thru body stringing or should I just stay with rounds on this bass?

SIT nickel rounds were stock for many years, then they switched to DA XL 170 nickel rounds, I believe.
I like both; neither are expensive.

Also for D'addario's you'll need the SUPER long scale to string through body. The regular XL long scale won't be long enough. They will work string through bridge though.
You can get the super longs here....

AFAIK, all of the DR strings are long enough for your L2500. I just put a standard set of Low Riders on my Tribute L2500 (through the body) and I had plenty of string left over.

thanks all...

I am taking the G&L in on Monday to replace bad input jack. Called the store and he said they had a set of D'ad nickels 5 string pack for $22, I didn't ask then but I bet they aren't the extra longs I need. So the Lo-Riders should work huh, are they nickel? I had some Chrome flats on my 55-01 and I was able to get pretty good slap still. I sure like the way flats dont trash my fingers, so may go that route. Outdoor gig tonite in S. Houston, gonna be hot, humid, sticky, Oh Boy. Celebrating Fiestas Patrias. Orale! Peace.

Lo-Riders are DRs hex-core strings that come in either steel or nickel, Sunbeams are DRs round-core nickel strings. I personally prefer the Sunbeams. On my L2500 and L2000, I use DR Black Beauties- they are steel strings with a coating on them that makes them a little mellower but last longer, they also feel very good under my fingers...

So are all of those DR's regular scale or do I need to order some other scale for thru body stringing on my G&L L2500 and my 55-01 also thru body. I need to get online and order strings soon. Whats difference in the hex-core and the round core? Sorry for all the ??'s, I dont change my strings too often and this will be the first time I use any DR's. So they have good life span too? thanks again.

just to add...

Just read a post over in the strings threads that a few folks are using the Long Necks for string thru on some of their basses. Is this the way to go or is the taper wounds not really needed on a L2500 or 55-01? Some speak of intonation issues due to the taper causing strings to be closer to the pups.

Any set of DR strings will be able to be strung through the body on your G&L- they make them extra long to begin with. I haven't tried the Long-necks, but I did try a tapered set of Black Beauties once and I did have some intonation issues with them- adjusting the bridge solved those problems pretty quickly though, I just didn't end up liking the tapered ones as much.
Hex-core stings have a stiffer tension/feel, and (to my ears) a more subtle midrange and high end- but a really thick low end too. Round-core are more flexible and have a really sweet midrange (at least with the nickel ones) and extended high end, but can be really, really bright when brand new. Sunbeams I've used have sounded good for a month and a half or so, but the Lo-Riders I've used don't seem to last as long to my ears- could just be a matter of perception/personal taste. I've used sets of Black Beauties for up to 5 months and still dig the sound...

I have never played Sunbeams on a L-2500 but I think they would go really well.

Standard sunbeams are long enough strung through the body of my L-2500. They rock. Note that with a B string thicker than .125 you may have problems with its intonation.

XL B too short...

Well I was at local store and they only had EXL170-5 reg lite scale, 45,65,80,100,130 long scale pack so I got em, the sales dude said they'd be long enough to string thru body on my L2500, the B was not. I had to string the B string over the bridge to use for a gig tonite, sounds OK, sits a little higher than the other strings, so thats abit awkward. Is this a problem, sonically, they sound nice? Cant take em back I already cut em to size. What should I look for in the D'aD nickels with either a longer B string or better a tapered/exposed core B string? Looks like I'll have to order some other strings online afterall.
Whats difference in the XL-165's or other XL-170's? thanks.
