Early G&L SB2

Can someone school me on the early SB2?
Looks like a current JB2, kinda, with 2 J pups, and with a "strat style" three way pup selector switch instead of vol/vol/tone.
Different from current issue SB2, and JB2 both.
How did this evolve into current sb/jb models?
See mine here:

it arrives today...

Wow, really nice! I like it!!!

I don't have the answers, but you can probably get most of your answers here: http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/

I can say my early SB1 (Pbass style) has the same neck it appears to yours in the picture, I understand neck widths may be different though and could be special ordered (there are threads here on this subject). The headstock is the "Fender" style (I think there was a lawsuit over that?), this was prior to the current style.

Good catch!!

Yessir, early headstock. I have 3 '81-'82 vintage G&L's now with this one. It's a wide neck, measuring almost 1 3/4...chunky! I like that tho. It's my understanding they made these from 82-84 only, but I've not been able to dig much up.
the GBL forum is pretty guitar oriented, and so far not much help. The G&L forum at the dudepit is much better, and some of those guys come here too...been trying both places hoping for more info...
Serial number on this one, on the neck plate, B011xxx, would seem to indicate mid 1983...

Greg Gagliano, AKA GGJaguar, is the foremost G&L bass expert. He says '82 to '84 is when they were made then contours were added and the name changed to Lynx.

Controls on both were V/T and a three way pup selector.

The G&LDP is mainly guitar focused.

Last night I noticed the bottom strap button has been repaired/moved a couple of times. It's solid now...
AZlso, the pickup selector switch seems backwards: pointed at the bridge, the neck pickup is on...not a big deal, just wierd. The control plate isn't the same wrinkle black finish as the bridge...again not a big deal, just makes me wonder why, especially with the pup selector backwards. I'll pop it off and look inside later...

If the wires are long enough, just unscrew the pup selector and reverse it. This is probably what happened to it in the first place.

I've played it live twice now. I like it!

PO had the action *high.* Lowered it to my personal comfort level, set intonation, tweaked the trussrod to "Missouri high heat and humidity" specs, and then lowered the micro-tilt a tad to adjust for that and...
Voila!
She plays just flippin' fine! I really like the trussro/micro-tilt tandem for getting the action just the way you want it.
Raised the bridge pickup way the heck up, and took the neck pickup up just a tad; they're balanced nicely now in terms of volume.
I have yet to compare these to my Reverend JJ to see if they're similarly hot, but she speaks nicely now too
Took her to work last night-medium sized venue, R&B/jazz/blues kinda band w/bass/guit/piano/drums/horns. Used a TFB420 and Schroeder 1210 set all flat, but with enhance at about 4, and it sure sits in the mix nice. I'd still rather have blend than the pup switch, but it works well.
The bridge pup barks and snarls nicely, the neck pup gets nice and fat, and the blended position is of course a little of both.
I put it down for the fourth set only to play the recently repaired 2500 Tribute, which came back from G&L with new strings and a really nice setup on it...

There's one that looks just like mine, but not beat to heck on ebay right now...
