A fork in the road

So today I took the TI flats I had off. I was becoming unsatisfied with the sound. This G&L just has such a voice and I really felt bad for taming it. That and I wasn't really getting the best sound I wanted out of the bridge pup. So I tried on a old set of rounds, not even sure the brand. But man I forgot how much they zing and sing and how hot the sound was on a l2000. Now I've hit a dilemma. As much as I like the sound of the rounds, I miss the round and fullness of the flats. Now I'm gassing for another l2000, this time, probably a tribute. When I do get the tribute I'll see which one I like what on what and such. Though I remember the tributes had smaller frets am I correct? I think I might prefer having the flats on the US and put the rounds on tribute and just play more with that. I don't know anyone in a similar dilemma?

I play with a pick exclusivley. G&L's pickups were too zingy for me. I owned then sold two tributes, a L-2000 and a L-2500, because I just couldn't get the sound I wanted out of them.

Then one day I came across a deal on a USA L-2000 that the previous owner had strung with the Half-Round ENR72's. The bass was transformed. No more zing and sizzle, but plenty of clang and bark. Drop 30 bucks on a set. It's worth the risk.

I use both rounds and flats. I keep my US L2000 and my MIA Jazz strung up with rounds, while my SB1 and SB2 are sporting TI Jazz Flats.

On the L2000, I recently threw on a set of TI Super Alloys..... they are the perfect string for this bass. I had been fighting with getting my head around the big sound of the 2 double coil MFD's, and found the TI's tamed a bit of the boomy low end and the compressed/zingy high end, without destroying the big sound.

I'm also finding that rolling off a bit more treble, series mode, active, with both or neck pu selected, I actually get a more "flatish" sound.

TI Jazz Rounds still intrique me..... all of the sound clips I've heard with them lead me to believe they are very dark sounding..... they might be a good string for the L2K.

I use Lo-Riders on my '83 SB-2 for a dark Jazz tone. TI Flats on my '81 L2K to tame the beast and LaBella FM flats on my '81 LK for a nice fat sound.
