Fret buzz on my L2K

Sign in to disble this ad
My '93 L2K is my "baby", but I have always battled fret buzz on the "A" string....even with what I would call higher action. Whats depressing is that my Sterling has waaayyy low action with just a skoche of buzz when plucked hard unplugged. I don't have any G&L dealers local that I know of and I can set up basses pretty proficiently. But this one has me stumped. I have adjusted the micro-tilt with little to no success, and have followed the set-up guide from G&L. Again, its mostly the A string and the E would be next buzzy. I'm pretty picky about the action so higher is not good. I realize a little buzz isn't going to be noticable plugged in unless I hammer it, but again, its the principle of why it buzzes the way it does.

Any suggestions? High frets maybe?

Thanks!
Scott

You might need fret dressing. Another possibility is a worn nut. Let a luthier take a look at it.

I own a older one 97 maybe, & I have never been able to get the action down where I want it. I set up my own guitars & have good luck with most of them. The problem with mine is the trus rod does not run the entire lenth of the neck & ends close to where the neck meets the body, so the neck is warped at the point of connection. But even down low on the neck it still is hard to get the action low enough. The thing is very heavy & really doesn't sound as good as my 82 L-2000. Now that's a great bass. Never was really happy with the 2500, but I got it for $800 brand new. So I bought a Schecter Elite 5, great bass. The action is unreal, tone great, & very light weight. Haven't played my 2500 since 03.

I've found that setup is a juggle between string height and relief. Eventually you find the right balance. Also, be careful about how hard you play. When I used to go to the local blues jam, I discovered that most of the guys played too hard and my amp settings would always be clipping for them but fine for me. I don't play too lightly, but as a guitar friend once said, let the amp do the work.

on both of my L2K's I get buzz on the A string no matter how high i set the action. I tried putting some foil in the slot in the nut to raise it up a little just to see if it helped and it solved the problem. Both basses are fairly new so I know it's not just a worn out nut, it was just filed to low when it was originally done. The chances of this being the case on both of mine I suppose is pretty rare but that's my kind of luck. I read somewhere on here to fill the nut with superglue and baking soda or something like that then file it back down, but i have not tried it yet.

good luck

I've noticed that almost all of the BBE made G&Ls I've played had nuts significantly higher than optimum, whereas my Leo-era L-2000's nut is basically as low as it could possibly be without any buzzing on open notes! Its pretty cool for me, because my old L-2000 was barely played before I bought it- but if your Leo-era was played hard for 14 years, you probably will need to replace the nut!
