How do you get a 3-way series/parallel/singlecoil package? Is that something offered or do you have to do it yourself (or is inside single coil a combination of switches?) I've only had the 2-way parallel/series and the 3-way pickup selector.

Too true. Acoustically, the difference in sound is pronounced on these two basses, and I attribute that to the Ebony vs. Rosewood mostly and Ash vs. Maple/Alder(?) second. While my two basses do back each other up very well, if I was being really picky I'd say the L-1505 sound is more "throaty" and my L-2500 is more "gutsy". That sound
does translate through the electronics, but I don't want to overstate that and make it seem like the difference would be huge for most people ... it is a nuance .. and I don't know if fretted ebony G&L's are plentiful anyway, I've only seen a few. (I personally prefer rosewood anyway).
It is always going to come down to the two specific instruments in question ... something I should have said before talking about the differences and similarities in my basses. (EDIT: Which also implies you could end up with two different sounding L-2500s)
