G&L # 8 Neck with BINDING Gun Oil Gloss

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone,

Does anyone out there have any first hand experience playing a G&L (ASAT, L2K or other) that has a #8 neck or I guess any other size, gunoil gloss, maple fret board neck with binding? I'd really like to go with the binding (me thinks awesome vintage look) however I recently tried out a new USA Fender 75 Jazz re-issue with black blocks and binding and was really turned off by how raised the binding was along the frets, necks edge. It was like running your hand over a bunch of rubberized speed bumps when you slid up the and down the neck. Perhaps that's actually they way they were back in the day, I dunno. Would the G&L bound neck have any "binding speed bumps"? I've tried quite a few other basses recently, authenic Fender vintage 75 jazz, Geddy Lee Fender Jazz, Schecter Elites that all had neck binding but in those cases the binding wasn't even felt, totally smooth. I have noticed that this option does not seem to be very popular based on all the G&L pictures I've seen here. Is it just because, my taste here, is just shall we say "unique" or are there other playablity issues that I might what to be aware of. Please let me know.

I have never played a G&L with neck binding. In general, I have found it to be a mixed bag. There was a '66 Fender Jazz that I owned where it felt perfect...others, not so much. For a nice vintage look, I would suggest just going with a maple board and GOT.

Take a look at this one and scroll down a little for a close up of the neck binding.

Hey Fred, that's my custom SB-2!

G&L did a perfect job with the binding, tho this is the only one I've ever touched, so...

Turns out, the unusually big black dots are a blessing, now that my vision aint what it used to be. Even in the dark, a quick glance does it. Useful!

The GOT has a nice feel. Not as "glassy" as a typical gloss finish, but still enough tack for a good thumb anchor. Perfect for those of us with uber dry skin. Not to mention it looks amazing!

Thanks Gents,

Feddels,

I scoped out the link and the close-up on the Cherry burst SB-2 and the binding looked awesome. I particularly like how nice and wide the binding actually is, I'm guessing a good 1/4" maybe even 5/16", yeah, that's what I'm talking about!!!. Very much like the "true" vintage 75 Jazz I was lucky enough to try out a while ago and that's exactly the type of "visual vibe" I'm seeking. Most out there now tend to use thinner materials. As for the 12 fret double dots appearing to be a little off, no biggie, it adds individual character IMO, as long as they get the big dots on the fret board perfect, it's all good to me. I think I won't even have to be concerned with G&L "speed bumping" the binding but if anyone has had a "not so good" experienece with the G&L's and their neck binding please let me know. I'd much rather be a "rather particular" okay, PITA Customer on the front end when things can be "win/win" than one on the back end when everybody gets to OD on aspirin and Maalox.

PS One of the peripheral pics was pretty hot too!...no not the cow dude, one of the other ones.

Thanks again

Templar,

Extremely awesome Bass dude! I hoping to be as fortunate as yourself but planning on maple FB with the GOT. I've got 8 rosewoods (not quite G&L's buy any stretch) and convinced myself that # 9's ...#9...#9 (sorry, small flashback there) gotta be sweet maple. Good to know the GOT is not grabby as I've already given thought to "satinizing" the back of the neck if need be but would really rather not mess with a true work of art.
No dig taken on the double dot comment I hope. My apologies if so. Marilyn Monroe had beauty marks, it's all part of the total unique picture.

Thanks again

I know.

It's definitely a looker. And I too wouldn't have wanted to be the original purchaser with all those add-ons. It must have been quite a pricey bass.

The list prices (when I ordered my ASAT in '06) were:

GOT = 200
Maple top = 250 or premium grade 550 + 750
Binding (body) was 120 for wood, 150 for white (that's just top or bottom) both would be double.
I didn't get a price on the neck binding but it's probably about the same.

#8 neck w/binding

I think my JB-2 neck is a #8 w/binding (at least I think it's a #8). It's beautifully done. Not as thick as the SB-2 in the picture I don't think, but completely smooth to the hand. It's not a gloss finish, though gloss doesn't bother me in the least. Nicer workmanship than my '71 Jazz binding, though that's nicely done ...and very glossy.

Ha, me either. As far as I can reckon it listed at about $2700. It may have been a G&L employee bass. It's prolly unique.

Even with all the bling, it was still the best sounding and lightest of a bunch of them, so it's the one I kept.

If I ever order a new G&L the GOT is a no brainer for me, I love it.
