G&L Asat. Lack of low-end output ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Got my first G&L today. It's a '96 Asat. To me it sounds phenomenal but I don't hear a lot of low-end.
My other basses have been '78 stingray (loaner, had to return after 3 years), '06 MIA Fender Jazz (the lack of quality is staggering). Both have more bottom-end than the G&L.

I've read that the Asat/L2000 is very bassy and quite a few roll of to taste. I find myself adding a few db after recording.
The poles on the pickups are slightly rusty, nothing major, but I'm wondering if that would have an impact on the sound. Battery ?

Again I'm more than happy with the way it sounds, I was merely curious after reading posts contrary to my findings.

Cheers

My 2002 vintage ASAT has got more bottom than J. Lo and Queen Latifa. I am also a former Stingray owner so I have similar history. I would have to give the edge to the ASAT on bottom end grunt. Not a super massive difference but one I can hear and feel.

You might try some different strings that you have lying around even if they are past their prime just to see if it makes much difference. You should be able to knock people down with a good set of flats.

Also, I play mine in passive mode about 90% of the time so the battery does not come into play for me.

Good luck . . .

Lack of low end from an ASAT?

Check out Ed Friedland's demo.

Your's should sound similar. Anything sound amiss?

Well the strings on there are probably a coupla years old. The previous owner said that he prefers old strings. I never had strings that old myself and thought that they only really lost treble with age

Any thoughts on the rusty poles ?

Have you tried ALL the switch settings yet? Also, I'm assuming that you are aware what each knob and switch does? Even so, there must be something screwy going on if a standard Jazz bass has more low end than your G&L- either some faulty or modified electronics? My L2000 (same pickups and electronics as an ASAT) has more inherent low end than any other bass I've owned, though it also has more high end than many- maybe you just need to cut the highs some?

Crazy thing to say! G&L bass lacking low end.....

Ok my previous test may have been flawed. Because the G&L has more sustained "tone" than the Jazz or Ray I had them turned up quite a bit louder which of course made them seem "bassier".

With everything level the bass response of all 3 seems about the same. Furthermore the Ray and Jazz could have been recorded thru my Sebatron Valve preamp which would emphasise bass. I've been using my Great River Me-1nv for the Asat. I'm really a guitarist and have no bass amp.

Here's a small di clip thru the Great river. First pick then fingers.
If there's something wrong with the bass I'm not sure I would repair it, because I really like the sound of it.

The issue you're having could be electronic-pups, wiring, whatever, it could be the strings, it could well be your amp...

I don't know what you rig you use or how you play, but lacking low end is not in the cards with my '03 ASAT-
As a matter of fact, with my amplification and eq, I'm better off playing the bass in passive mode without the Bass Boost!

It's got fierce low end.

I posted the MP3 in hope that some kind soul would listen to it and compare it to their own l2000/asat in DI mode. I live in Copenhagen, Denmark and I know of no G&L shops here.
Would be nice if somebody could make a comparison and report back.

Cheers
