If you can stand hardcore/post-rock type music, there's a band called "envy" whose bass player uses an L-1000. There should be a bunch of youtube vids of them in both a recorded and live setting. They're from Japan.

Not necessarily a great recording, but this is a 1981 L-1000 that I believe has a maple body, playing "Green Eyed Lady" in a live situation. With a little imagination, you can hear some of the "grind" that this bass can put out.

Interesting stuff. On all the clips I've seen thus far it sounds like he has the tone knob rolled off, so it's hard to judge the treble/midrange capabilities of this bass.
