| To me, the more direct comparison would be the Big Block P vs. the G&L L-1500, because both are "sweet spot" humbucker basses. I have an L-1500, and I've tried the Big Block, which occupies a similar tonal neighborhood despite its lack of the mighty MFD humbucker. I wasn't real impressed with the Fender's feel and construction though, which goes against the general trend of improved quality in Fender's MIM models. I'd take a used L-1500 any day, but maybe I just caught a bad example of the Big Block. Who knows?
The L-1500 and Big Block have a unique tone, and aren't nearly as versatile as an L-2000. If you're looking for the specifically aggressive tone of something like the L-1500 or Big Block (or EBMM Sterling), go for it, but if you want maximum versatility with boatloads of punch for hard rock, get the L-2000. I love my L-1500, but if I could have only one bass to cover everything, I'd take a Jazz, Precision or L-2000 first.
