G&L neck removal advice

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a mid 80's SB1 that I want to take the neck off of to check the production dates. Other then the 3 screws on the neck plate do I have to remove the microtilt adjustment screw as well? Any other advice?

No need to remove the micro-tilt. The three big screws will do it. When you get in there, clean the pocket out and then make sure the micro-tilt is backed off (basically, at zero, or flush with the neck) and adjust (tighten it) only of you need it.

Ignorant people have messed up more than a few early G&L necks by not understanding how to use the micro-tile properly.

Just watch out for letting the neck move side to side in the pocket once you remove all the screws. The pockets on G&Ls are generally very tight so any side to side movement will easily chip the finish at the neck pocket edge.
