G&L Simulation Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this question has been asked before because I saw the thread and even printed it out many moons ago. But now I can find neither the printout nor the thread itself.

The question is: what settings on the L2X00 best simulate (1) a P bass, (2) a jazz bass, (3) a MM bass. For a made-up example, for P sound: solo the neck pup, series, passive, bass at 80%, treble at 25%, etc.

I know that the P, J and MM sounds cannot be simulated exactly, but I also know that you can get pretty close.

Can someone help steer me toward that old thread, or post your own settings? TIA

To my ears all that matters is the pickup switches

1. Neck pickup, series
2. Both pickups, series
3. Can't be done

For 1 and 2 all other settings don't matter much since the L2000 can't really cop the sound of a P or J. More or less bass, treble, or volume are essentially slight variations on approximating a P or J tone. For 3 IMO there is no Stingray approximation to be found in the L2000.

Maybe this is the thread you're looking for: The official 'how to' tone guide.

On my L2500:

1) neck PU only, series mode.
2) jazz neck PU only = L2500 neck PU only, parallel mode
jazz both PU = L2500 both PU's, parallel mode
jazz bridge PU = L2500 bridge PU, parallel mode
3) MM = L2500 bridge PU, parallel mode.

My L2000 has a much woolier sound than my 2500 and can do a better MM imitation.

The jazz imitation is poor, but is a lot better, IMO, more heft and distinction in the notes.

The P sound of the neck PU virtually nails the precision sound, tho, especially in series mode. In parallel mode some nasality is added that makes it a little more jazz-like.....

My Tribby L-2000s wiring is stock, but I've done Sunbeast's pole adjustment: crank the pickups as far into the body as you can, then jack up one row of poles to the normal setup height, and the other row as far into the pickup housing as possible.

I lifted the outer poles, so when in Parallel mode the signal is closer to a Jazz. If I solo the Bridge pickup and roll the treble off, I get a very Jaco-ish burp that I just couldn't get with a standard setup. Soloing the Neck pickup gets me closer to 51 P bass or Jazz neck tones.

The cool thing is that in Series mode the difference is less pronounced, so I still have the hot humbucker tones available. Soloed Neck with a few tweaks to the EQ sounds very P-ish.
