Hipshot Ultralights on a Tribby L-2500

Anybody make this conversion? I'm thinking of putting these on my Trib because it is a neck-diver even with a 3.5" leather strap. I would have to drill holes in the back for the single screw. Just wondering if anyone has made this conversion and how well it works, thanks.

Hi, I put the small shaft hipshots on my trib 2.5 and workrd great. I did with the small shafts have to leave the G&L sleeves in the hole and it still made a big difference and improved overall feel. I think(but not sure) that if you had the bigger shaft hipshots that you could remove the (heavy) g&l sleeves and actually use the screw on hipshot sleeves and washer only for an even greater weight reduction. One word of caution, be very careful when attempting removal of the g&l bushing sleeves as mine were pressed in and will not come out easily. For me this was a great mod and well worth it.

Update

I bought a set of 1/2" post Ultralights here on TB for a good price and installed them in my Tribby. I removed the neck, pulled the old tuners out and got the sleeves out by tapping them with a hammer and screwdriver. The G&L holes are slightly larger than the Hipshot sleeves so there's a bit of play but it's not a problem once they're tightened down. I like how the Hipshot tuning keys don't stick out as much, looks neater. And they really are lighter!

Weight of bass with stock tuners: 11 lbs 2 oz

Weight with Hipshot Ultralights: 10 lbs 4 oz

Still a beast, but much better balance now, no more neck dive when strapped on.

Do you notice any new dead spots on your E or B strings, after you installed ultralites?

No dead spots anywhere, before or after. It's a good neck.

After a 4.5 hour practice last night using only my L2500 Tribby, I am thinking about this mod as well. I dont get the neck dive, its just all around H E A V Y! My shoulders were killing me last night.

So what would be the comparable 'direct' replacement? The 1/2" or the 3/8" ultralight, clover? I'm thinking about doing this mod as well for the sole purpose of alleviating weight.

I'm really enjoying my Tribby L2500 but not sure if I can hang with the weight. It might just drive me to buy a USA in Alder with the ultralights already on it!
