How much does the lack of a Cerificate on an obviously American L-2500 hurt its resale value?

In my mind, zero. The certificate in this case only certifies the obvious. They are forms that are hand numbered, so anyone could get a blank and write any serial number on the form. Were I purchasing a G&L, the certificate would be a total non-factor.

A collector who wanted to put the bass in a glass case might be a bit put off, but I suspect a real player wouldn't care. You're not going to get a bumper sticker with a used Fender, it's still on the original owner's '89 Corolla.

A person, who wants to sell you a bass with certificate will tell you that it's important.

It is a tone secret. You need to have one.

Kinda thought so.

I sold my L-2000 to a fellow TB'r. I provided the official cert to him, but I didn't make a big deal about it in my listing.

I just purchased its replacement, an L-2500, from Robbie's in New Jersy. It was a floor model and they lost the cert but IMO, so what! I got it for a very fair price.

I was torn between a Lakie 55-02 and the L-2500. Both great basses, but my L-2000 gave me souch a great tone, I didn't want to change my tone in my effort to go five string. You don't play a certificate

Congratulations, great move. You will enjoy it immensely.

I acquired my L2K in 03 but last October, moved to the L2500. It has become my main bass but I'm keeping the L2K however, as it's just too sweet to let go!
