How many SB-2s is too many SB-2s?

I have the opportunity to trade for my 3rd SB-2 in the past 12 months.

The first one I purchased off of ebay. It's my main bass. I use it in my Eb band. It supplanted my Sterling (See sig) as number 1.

The second one I purchased new off of ebay. It's a black on black Tribute. I'm using that in my standard tuning band.

The third one I would get via trade at TB for my trusty Sterling. The tradee is an olympic white/tort SB-2 with the tone mod.

For s&g tonight, I played my Sterling for the first time in many months. It sounded great and I enjoyed the time I spent with it. Truth be told, however, if I wasn't planning on trading, I wouldn't have whipped it out for old time's sake.

Trouble is, the Sterling has been with me since 96 and it's my baby, played or not. It's got the most beautiful bird's eye maple neck. It's had numerous treatments at the hands of Mike Lull. I know this bass inside and out. Yet... the SB-2 calls me.

What to do?

The white SB-2 would definitely see playing time. It would be one of three SB-2s I own. If I don't trade, the Sterling would still be mine, only sitting most of the time on my guitar stand.

I'm so torn!

You're showing symptoms of the dreaded MFD Fever.

It can take years to overcome it. Some people never get cured.

Make the trade, might as well indulge yourself 'til you get over it.

Yeah, I'm a sufferer of that horrible fever....I have two US SB2's, a Tribute and an SB1. Man, I love the sound of those pickups. Our drummer was asking me what kind of bass I was using last night, that he's just floored by the sound, thought I had it going through a slight overdrive... I even plug it into the active input because the output is so hot, but I can get almost a John Wetton type of tone just going straight....

In the words of Kelis: "I hate you so much right now - aaaagh!"

Actually, I can live without another rosewood fretboard - if it had been maple, it would be another story.
