Hi Guys I have deciede I want a G&L
Most likley a tribute
Im a bit new to the characteristics of each model can someone fill me in so I can decide what would suit me best
I play mostly fingerstyle heavy loud stoner Rock/Groove/metal through a VTbass and ashdown rig
And would like to have a big powerfull sound with lots of high end bite and cutting but not honking mids . Do I want an L2000 , L1000 or an SB2
I like the look of all of them so thats not an issue

you won't regret it. |

My Tribby has a swamp ash body and maple fretboard and roars like a mighty beast. The main modification people talk about on this forum is toning down the power.

The older ones have "Tribute" written in large black letters.
It will say "made in indonesia" on the back of the headstock.
And while I'm posting pics, check out the grain on this bad boy. |

A few things to consider: 1) the neck profile, especially if you're looking at a Tribute. The SB2 is similar to a Fender Jazz (1.5" nut), where as the L2000 is wider (1.75" nut). You do have options on the US models, by the way, but not on the Tributes. 2) do you want active/passive (L2000) or completely passive (SB2)?
From what it sounds like you're looking for, I'd lean toward a L2000 as well. I think the SB2 is a great bass, but it is definitely more mid-range based (though you can get a sharp high-end bite with the bridge pickup dialed in), whereas the L2000 has a wider tonal pallet. I think the SB2 lends it self well to playing with a pick, whereas I find the L2000 lends itself more to fingerstyle. Just my opinion, though.
Aw, screw it, get both.

| | | | I think Americanmusical.com stocks only the Indonesian Tributes. I bought mine from there and it was Indonesian. I was quite impressed! The L2000 is definitely the one for modern/progressive rock. If you buy from American Musical...your specs will be Swamp ash, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, USA electronics, G&L on the bridge(instead of the Tribute logo), and made in Indonesia.

I was always a jazz bass guy, own a 08 and a 66 and i got an SB2 on an impulse buy, its now my most played bass, it feels almost like a jazz to play but just has the biggest angriest sound ever!
Its just a beast of raw power waiting to be unleashed!
Its not the most versatile but it sounds good in most situations, if your like me and dont like having a million switches and knobs on a best it is the best you can find, volume/volume and no fooling around...
Just wanted to add that i never play with a pick, that i play everything, from jazz to funk and rock that i dont believe in eq's, and that i always manage to make this bass sound good!
You dont need lots of gadgets to get good sound out of it....

Bear in mind that you will have to pay duty, VAT and a post office "handling fee" on top of what the bass plus shipping actually sets you back. It will be around 23% in total. Having said that, I got both my L2000s for a total price that was less than the UK retail price of their Tribute counterparts. The exchange rate was a lot better then though. |
