Question installing SB-2 pickups in a Jazz bass ?

Sign in to disble this ad
i've been thinking about building a frankenstein G&L / Jazz bass .

currently , i have :
jazz bass body - black
precision bass neck - maple /maple
jazz bass control plate , bridge and tuners
- also , i have a set of single coil SB-2 pickups .
{ like these , but new , never installed ...}

i was wondering if anyone had ever attempted this ,
and would the end result be worth the efforts of routing the body to accept the pickups ?

i'm not planning on any re-sale , but i'd like some input for TalkBass members before i start the project ...
{ btw, i'm a fair hand with a router...}

thanks in advance for any tips or opinions , and hopefully not slamming me about this .
peace ,
dave

Have at it!

You'll need one of these and a template to guide it.

Heh...

Sorry, David.

In all seriousness, it should sound pretty good, though a bit different from a G&L due to the bridge & pickup placement.

It should be a good match physically because of the width of the "P" neck, which means the strings should center reasonably well over the poles. Note that the G&L pickups are the same width, as opposed to the differing widths of most Jazz pickups, so centering will be the name of the game.

Do the wiring in simple Jazz fashion; V-V-T. Use 250K audio taper pots and a 0.047mfd cap.

Don't forget the pickguard when doing the routing.

Sounds like a fun project.
