JB-2 came with Hipshot Tuners??

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a used USA JB-2 that came with Hipshot Tuners on it (has the regular G&L tapered posts). The guy I got it from ordered it new in the summer and didn't even know it had them till later. So my question is was this an odd duck, special order or what?

Thanks

Normal. The odd set of Schallers gets out, but not too often.

Thanks Ken. If I understood correctly I think you were saying the odd set of Hipshots (not Schallers?) gets out on a bass once in a while as opposed to the normal GL tuners? Maybe I misunderstood something? (I make no claims of everything in the head working properly!)

What I meant was that it is now normal to see Hipshot tuners on G&L basses, though the occasional set of Schallers slips through.

G&L Ultralite bass tuners used to be made by Schaller. Then supply got kind of dodgy a few years ago, so Hipshot became the OEM of choice. They're supposed to be G&L-stamped. During the transition to the Hipshots, a few Hipshot-stamped tuners were installed.

My personal preference is for Schallers, but that's just me.

Thanks Ken for the clarification and the good info. Much appreciated!

I havent had the bass long enough to form an opinion yet. The Hipshots "look" like they are more substantial and well made, but seem to be a little more smooth--possibly too smooth going toward the slightly loose side of things.

Look carefully on the back of the the tuner and and you'll find a small allen wrench adjusting screw. Loosen or tighten it as needed to reduce or remove slop in the tuner.

I was wondering if that was not their purpose. Now there's a good idea for tuners. Thanks!

The schallers are right good tuners, and I like them a lot.
The hipshots are a little higher ratio, which I find nice once you get used to them.
