jb-2 & sb-2 neck questions...

Sign in to disble this ad
so I finally could try out usa jb-2 & sb-2 basses at a store...
both nice instruments!

my question about the neck: the guy at the store said that both were standard necks (the sb-2 one had a birdseye maple board if that says anything).

the width at the nut, radius & overall shape were about the same, but the sb-2 neck was thicker. not a very big difference, but enough that I had a strong preference for the sb-2 neck..

I donīt see that option on the gl website.. is it just a variation because they are hand built?

Not so much hand built as hand finished, but yeah. Another pair of instruments would likely feel different.

Assuming that both necks are the same "new" narrow standard (#8), they came off the CNC machine with the same dimensions. All final shaping and sanding is done hands-on by humans at various machines, and this is where some variance takes place. These little variances could be due to imperfections in the wood that get sanded out, or just because that's the way that guy does it. YMMV.

Unless you really want a JB, save your money and time for an SB. Get it....

Trust me on this one...

I guess that could be, but there really is a little bit of variance between necks that have the same profile number. This would be true any time a human is involved in the finishing process, regardless of manufacturer. Some are a bit more consistent than others, but there are going to be tiny differences in even the most consistent of automated manufacturing because we're dealing with wood.
