| I've played the JB-2 a few times and owned the L2k for 23 years. I also owned a 89 SB-2. I did find that I wanted a little more bass umph with the stock JB-2 jazz pick ups. But maybe I would have found I was able to EQ that in had I had more gigging experience with the JB-2. Or even trying flat wound strings.
Comparing it to the L2K. You would lose the jazz type honk/bark you get from an Alnico, jazz, single coil magnet pick up . But I have no problem setting up my L2K to get that 60's thumpy JohnPaul Jones early Zeppelin jazz bass tone. And it can be very smooth with the right treble and bass knob settings. Try L2K set up with- both pickups on, set at either series or parrallel,treble knob set about 40% and bass set 50%. Adding more treble gives a more modern zing to a subdue jazz tone.
As far as the SB-2 goes- When I tried it used in a music store it had super dead strings on it and it had major thump and very hot pick ups. But when I got it home and cleaned it up and put some round wounds on, it was super agressive. Lots of treble. It will cut through any mix like a chain saw. But I just could never smooth it out to sound like a classic Precision even though it has split coil neck pick ups. I got rid of it. Again maybe some really dark flats would have made it more usable for me. I really wanted to like it but everytime I plugged in my L2k the tone I was looking for in the SB-2 was there with the L2K.
The L2k is far more adjustable for P bass smooth, P bass agressive, jazz bass 60's thumpy, Music Man slappy and anything zingy. Yes it would be a good bet to add thump compared to a JB-2 sound without being in a different world.
