Ken Smith Slick Rounds vs D'Addario Half Rounds vs Chromes on my L2500?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an L2500 coming in this week and I'm looking to get a thumpier sound out of it than the D'Addario XL's that are installed on it now. I used to own an L2000 and loved the sound I got from SIT Powerflats (half round/ground round), but they don't make a 5-string set. I want a smooth feel, tight tension, thumpy sound, but I still want articulation and clarity (no mud). I had Chromes on an active Ibanez 5-string and loved the sound as well.

In your opinion which of these would sound best on my L2500?

I was looking forward to some folks responding to your request so I guess I'll start.

Of the strings you mention, I have only tried the Chromes. I like them quite a bit. They have a nice fundamental that only seems to come from flatwounds. The tension is higher than roundwounds, which is typical of virtually all flats except the Tomasik Infeld flats, but not as high as the Fender flats I tried before. I like the Chromes more than the Fenders.

If you are into slapping, forget flats. Yes you can slap them but with twice the efffort and half the results. I'm not much on slapping so Chromes work for me.

Congratulations on the 2500. You are going to love it.

Are they articulate? I don't want mud but I do want a smooth feel and more girth to my sound.

Chromes

I put a set of Chromes on my Tribby, and was very pleased. Nice deep and thick with no fret noise. Tribby is long gone now.

I put a set of Chromes on my Tribby, and was very pleased. Nice deep and thick with no fret noise. No mud at all. Tribby is long gone now.
