Sorry I am a noob looking to purchase my first G&L and was wondering if this pic is a ash or mahogany body... I think it is stained ash, but not an expert.
Many Thanks...

| | | | Thanks guys... A mahogany is what I have been searching/waiting for... I think I emailed Metron too late on his 'Hog he had for sale. What would be a decent offer to make on it... the guy is open to negotiate... has a cple non-stock knobs... no red thingy on the switch... gig-bag, no original hard-case - has normal wear-tear - frets are in good shape... it is a '80 or '81 model L-1000. Any guidance is helpful...

$700 seems pretty high. I'd want an original one for that much cash.
Don't forget, L-1000's have slipped into the "vintage guitar" catagory recently, so originality is part of their value now.
Even a beater in original condition is always worth more than any refin. Just sayin..... |

| | | | The dealer deals in vintage guitars and has and sells lots of vintage gear. He says that it is original except two of the knobs, and no OHSC and is in excellent condition. They have done a setup on it and has new strings. So... I have no clue except the Blue Book guide that is on Amazon says a 90% exc condition L-1000 blue books for $750.

| Whoa....just noticed that phrase.
There is one solitary part on an L-1000 that you will never be able to replace....and that is those freekin knobs.
No one I know has ever seen the bass ones for sale, ever. If a set ever hits ebay it will be a fascinating auction to watch.
It sounds silly, but if it were me, I'd deduct some serious points for missing knobbage and possible refin, and view it as just a good utility bass only. |

| | | | I saw that auction, and it looks like a refinish to me. Not that it might not be a perfectly servicable bass, but it's definitely been through the wringer.
I'd keep looking. |

| | | | It has knobs, as seen in the pic... they just are not originals... maybe from a L-2000? This is my dilema... what I want is a utility type mahogany L-1000... not a collectors investment type... I just have no idea what to offer him as it is... The price he has on it is def too high... He has lotsa Fenders, so I guess he based it on the Fenders condition/value... He wants me to make an offer, and I just do not wanna pay over the fair-market value... $550 maybe?

| | | | Here is another pic closer up... no idea on the refinish job or original? I think the 1980 had the nitrocellulose lacquer, so not sure how it ages over time...

| | | | Nate,
I'd wait and look around...here, on Craigslist, etc. For a little more, say $850, you should be able to pick up a nice L-1000 with original parts/finish intact. Los Angeles Craigslist just had a 81 hog L-2000e for $795--it was a bit weighty for me at 10lbs plus, but looked to be in great shape. |

| | | | Thanks guys... I know the ole 'Hog L-1000 and L-2000's are getting scarce... I think I read somewhere that Leo while at G&L produced less basses in some timespan... like 10 years... than Fender did in 1955 - or something weird like that... maybe only 2500ish basses made... My brain is for crap at remembering details... but nonetheless... the oldies, esp the 'hogs are getting harder to see.
I think there is a hog L-2000 on Ebay... or somewhere of the 40+ places I have looked for G&Ls LOL
I guess playing a mahogany body acoustic is what is making me yearn for a 'hog bass also... I will be patient tho.
