L-2000: Want to change fretted neck to fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
I was wondering if a fender P or J bass fretless neck would fit on my L-2000. I really want to start playing fretless, but I can't afford to buy a new one. If the J and P won't fit, can someone give me some other options on necks? Thanks

I think you can order one from G&L. Maybe not though... I'm not 100% sure. I know Warmoths won't fit, and I am almost certain Fenders won't either. Then there's the whole 6-bolt vs 4-bolt problem. There's always taking it to a good luthier for a defret as an option too. Probably the cheapest way to go.

The only ways to get a replacement G&L neck (for a US model) is to order one from G&L (through a dealer) and the last time I heard of someone doing that it was very expensive (greater than $300 IIRC). None of the standard replacement necks are going to fit.

Moses claims their necks can be built with a heel that fits G&Ls - but those are expensive as well.

If your G&L is a Tribute, well there aren't any fretless Tributes and I've never heard of anyone obtaining a replacement neck for one.

Occasionally I've seen G&L necks for sale on ebay.

Other than that you might want to consider an inexpensive fretless (Rondo, etc.). Or I suppose you could defret your G&L if you are desperate (can you tell I wouldn't go down that route?).

G&L necks have more frets than Fenders as well I believe, so the pocket goes further into the body...

If you order a neck from G&L, be prepared to lose your instument for 3 months. Thats exactly what is happening to me. G&L service is worse than getting dental work done without anesthesia.

That's the only way I get dental work done. (that still doesn't mean that I like to wait)
