L1000 compared to L2000

I see one on the bay, an L1000 and I'm thinking of bidding. I've got an L2000 and now I'm left wondering if I'm gonna be satisfied or will I feel like, " Oh well. I've already got this but with an extra pickup." Any one know what I should expect?

I have an '81 L-1000 and an L-2000 Tribute. To my ears, the L-1000 sounds better than the Tribute with the neck p/u alone (richer? if that's allowed). It also has the bass boost position on the switch. On the other hand, the L-2000 is lighter and has more versatility. I go back and forth between the two. I do not regret for a second buying the L-1000, but I don't have much into it, either. FWIW, the L-1000 feels better in my hands and (I believe) is a neck width no longer offered. Others here swear by them. Their opinions might be of more use.

I had the same concerns before I bought my L-1000. It's a different animal. The L-1000 is a very simple bass that gives you 3 distinct and very usable tones, including the bass boost which sounds like it's active. I prefer the tone of my L2K (Both are '81s) but probably use the 1K more.

If you buy one, I think you'll find they compliment each other nicely, especially with different strings.

It's worth noting that the L-1000 pickup placement is slightly different from the L-2000's bridge pickup. It should have a little more boom and slightly less "zing" than the bridge pickup(soloed) on the L-2000.

Seriously? I would have said with 100% certainty that they are the same spot but I dont have my basses right here.

I have an 80 L1000 and an 83 L2000. I love them both but to me the L1000 is definitely redundant. I dont feel that its different in any significant way. I can get all the L1000 sounds on the L2000. Again love them both and use them equally often but I am never at a loss with the L2000, sometimes I am with the L1000.

The pickup on my old L1000 was in the same location as the neck pickup on my L2000- I did measure it. The only differences I noticed were the obvious addition of the "single coil" mode on the L1000 (I modified my L2000 to include this) and the fact that you could put the single pickup on the L1000 closer to the strings than the dual pickups of the L2000 without getting noticeable magnetic interference ( I could put the L1000 pickup pretty much right up on the strings without any problems, whereas I have to keep my L2000s pickups more than 1/8" under the strings or I get intonation problems in the higher register). The main reason I kept the L2000 over the L1000 is that big thumbrest/ bridge pickup thing... : )

You are correct. I am in error here. It is the L-1500 that has the slightly different pickup placement. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, and it would be the neck pu and not the bridge pu.

Ok...fixed. I think. It's not my week for cogent brain activity. Anyway, what I meant to say here....the L-2000's bridge pickup is located differently from the L-1500's single pickup. Therefore, the sound is somewhat different if you compare the L-1500 to either pickup soloed on an L-2000. At any rate, since the L-1500 was not the subject of this original discussion, I took the thread pretty far afield. I'll go back into my cave now.
