L1000 fretless setup tip ...

Hey guys,
for those of you who have had (or are having) a hard time getting really nice mwah from your wunkay, here is what helped...in my case.
I've searched high and low on setups for these beasts here on TB and the only things that I had yet tried, according to the posts I found, were to file the nut slots and lower the pickups. I just just spent a good hour filing down the slots almost all the way down to the fingerboard and I lowered the pickups some and extended the pole pieces (just a hair).... OH MY! What a different animal! I was almost convinced that I would never get a satisfying mwah from this bass, but thank God I was wrong. If any of you out there are still having issues, you should really consider giving these steps a try.
Just had to share my good fortune

I must add that this was done AFTER I did a proper trussrod, micro-tilt, and saddle adjustment.

Glad you got it there! Is this an older L-1000 or one of the new BABP instruments?

Nut filing seems to be very common for G&L fretless basses. Fretted too, though this will vary some.

The reason is that G&L cuts the nuts on their basses as if it's for a fretted bass, regardless of whether or not it's actually going to be fretted. Obviously, this leaves the fretless guys in the lurch. This is the case to this day, where the nuts are cut by the Plek machine.

It sometimes leaves the fretted guys in the lurch too because sometimes the action is too high. I had to lower the nut slots a lot on my new L-2500 to get the action down to normal spec.

Aha

Well I guess that makes sense...everybody has their own tastes as far as setups go. I am the very happy owner of an '84 L1k; got her here on TB
