Happened to me once; I spotted it on the picture the dealer sent me, and after some measurements it turned out I was right. The story was that G&L just switched to the new thinner bodies and hadn't set the machines correctly.
Back it went, and they made me another one...
This one seems to have the same mistake. I hope I'm wrong...
Edit: Here's a crude 'photoshop' I made for myself back then to compare the pickup positions. Watch the alignment with the volume knob.

Ive been using only the bridge pup lately and noticed this "L1500" seems to have the pup in the same location, so I thought maybe G&L thought that the Bridge pup is all that is needed... |

There is a huge difference in sound between the L-1500 and the solo'd bridge pickup on a Tookay.

The other interesting thing is that I pulled the neck to check the mfg dates, and they're both from Feb 1996. From everything I could find, the L1500 wasn't officially in production until 1997. Anyone shed some light on this? Might I have gotten one of the protos based on an L2000 body?
In any case, the neck is a dream and the body is gorgeous. I cannot for the life of me find a seam - it really looks to be one piece.
Anyway, I'll see if I can get through to G&L and report back...

If I were you, I'd get another pick-up and turn it into an L-2000, if the body is so nice! Maybe G&L will do it for you?
Good luck anyway!

Also toying with the idea of putting in a split-coil MFD like the one in the SB2, since I have a blank slate to work with on that part of the body. Make it kind of an SB2000 or something...

Long story short, yes, the pickup was in an identical spot to the L2000. well, they decided to replace the body. After that, they realized they made a 6-bolt body to pair with my 3-bolt neck, so they gave me a new neck, too. So, now I've got a 2009 neck/body with 1996 hardware/electronics.
I have to say, I really commend G&L for taking care of their customers...

The PU location on mine looks to be stock.

Bassist was playing an upright for part of the show and I was talking with a friend while listening. All of a sudden the bass sound changed--snapping--growling--nasty goodness was cutting through and smacking me in the face.
Went up and checked, sure enough...G&L L1500. I now have GAS. What a KILLER sound! Some day...some day!
