| L1K electronics: old vs new--difference?

So I'm starting to sniff around for a used L1K and I've heard it said that sometime late in their run (presumably late 80s/early 90s) the electronics changed a bit.
No, I'm not talking about front-loaded vs. rear-loaded controls, but that there were different components, like maybe a different cap for the bass boost mode?
No one has ever been able to explain it to me in terms of tone. It's like it's just another one of those minor G&L changes in mid-production, like going from black to chrome hardware (bad example, probably).
Does anyone know the real story? Or, failing that, does anyone have both an early and a late model who can provide some comparison in tone between the two?
Or should I just not worry about it and assume whatever year I come across is going to have that G&L magic? I mean, nice basses are sort of like snowflakes anyway in that no two are exactly alike, right?
