You found a problem with that open coil but see if that was the cause of your woes.

Jim
So I got off my duff and slapped what was the good neck pickup into the bridge position. Cleaned out as much of the old solder as possible while I was in there.

Bingo, no issues whatsoever. Every switch and knob in every setting does just what it is supposed to. Tried the screwdriver test in every combo of settings and got a nice even pop out of both coils.

I am assuming this means that the open coil was most likely the cause of the other issues?

It is kind of strange playing it with just the one pickup in. I definitely notice the difference though. Before I always found the bridge pup on it's own was way to thin and anemic sounding even with the bass knob dimed, not realizing that only one coil was working. It sounds fuller and richer now.

Definitely looking forward to the replacement pickup coming.

Thanks again Ken and Spidey for all your fantastic advice (spidey was my dads nickname for me when I was a kid). All the support kept me from getting choked about my bass screwing up. As a plus I now also know alot more about how this sucker works.

So I sent the bum pickup off to G&L and two weeks later the fedex truck drops off a new one. It's a bit different looking in that the poles are not as shiny and they sit more flush with the plastic housing. I think it may be an old one they had sittin around as it uses the springs where mine had the foam blocks.

Hooked it up to the multimeter and all is well, so in it goes.

HOLY CRAP!

This sounds better than any other L series or ASAT I have tried! It's got punch and clarity like crazy, awesome low mid growl and enough bottom to rupture water mains. Turn up the treble and you get a cool fret burble sound and no harshness at all (even with stainless strings). That bad pickup really messed up the whole tone.

Been playing it for two days now and I just keep liking it more and more. Simply awesome.

Amazing thing was is that I liked the tone just fine before .

Also, finally a positive experience with G&L customer service!
