A little Wunkay Help

Sign in to disble this ad
I just had My Hog 1k refinished and it is properly wired according to the G&L Schematic. But with the 3 way switch in the position closedt to the neck it sounds normal the middle Position and the lowest position sound like OMG position but will not give a clean signal with enough gain to make the Bass useable (lots of distortion). Any ideas aside from replace everything and go from there. The pots still function as normal. Could it actually be as simple as a bad switch?

It could be a multitude of things. It sounds like it is not wired correctly.

If you have good sound in parallel, you should still have good sound when going single coil (which should be the middle position). When you go from parallel to single coil, you are switching one of the coils out of the circuit that was already there in parallel. It makes no sesne that the tone is fine with all the coils in place and then degrades when removing two of them. So if your transistion from parallel to single coil is wrong, I would start with the 4PDT switch.

I checked the wiring and everything seems to be getting to the right place so I'll try the switch. Thanks for the help.

That refin looks quite nice. You should post the link with pics. Was anything messed with or was the control plate just removed and replaced for the refin? Could just be a bad connection. I would try dressing all the solder points.

I would post a link with pics if I could figure out how. And all he did was remove plate and Pickup for the refin but everything was put back like it was. It sounds different with the switch all the way uo towards the neck but the mid and bottom position sound exactly the same. I'll try resoldering the switch joints later.
Henry when you played at T's Saturday it was working fine it sounded different in all 3 positions. I checked the wiring and everything is connected to where it belongs but not exactly like the diagram. So I am going to try to resolder the switch and then I'll start the replacing things process.

Anyone know where to find a replacewment switch for this Bad boy?

If you find a way to post the photos - please include a nice overall view of your refinished Wunkay!

You need a DPDT Toggle Switch that goes on-on-on. You would be best find one local because many on-line places have mimimum orders. This should be a less than $5 part.

Here's an expensive one:

Thanks For the help The switch is toast and I am going looking for a new one tomorrow. Should be a relatively easy fix.
