I currently have 2 of them - a US black/maple and a Tribute sunburst/maple. I've had a lot of SB-2s over the years and I guess that rosewood boards are more common but maple aren't that difficult to find with a little patience.

If you are interested in Tributes only the first generation (made in Korea) SB-2s came with maple boards. Those are fairly uncommon. The current generation Tributes (made in Indonesia) only have rosewood on the SB-2s (the JB-2s are available with maple boards and ash bodies - who knows why they don't offer those combinations on the Trib SB-2s).

Give it some time and you'll find what you are looking for. They seem to go in cycles alternating between none available and lots available. I suspect with the economy in the state it's in that lots of basses will become available over the next year or so if you are in a position to buy.

Not for sale, but Craig (who REALLY knows his SB-2 availability) is right. Hang in there and one will turn up someplace.

My current 2:

and some previous maple boarded SB-2s:

another Tribby with maple board that I wouldn't mind having back:

sunburst/maple is the most common maple-boarded SB-2 I've come across (I've had 2 with that combo):

Taking a look at my history my personal score is about 3-to-1 rosewood-to-maple on SB-2s (includes US & Trib but excludes the fretlesses that were ebony).

Music-Go-Round has an SB-2 wearing a maple JB-2 neck that I've been tempted by (http://www.musicgoround.com/gear/inv....asp?id=684995) but they want $650 for it which is a bit steep for a parts-bass IMO.

On Gbase there's a cool red one with maple board and matching headstock: http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/Gea...x?Item=1935318

GuitarAdoptions is showing a couple of sold ones with maple boards.

In general SB-2s aren't as popular as L2Ks so most places don't seem to stock too many. But your favorite G&L dealer can get you one in whatever combination of body wood, finish, fretboard and optional features you want.

My 2008 custom order SB-2:

This one was bought from guitaradoptions.com and is currently on its way to me (2nd owner):

In this picture you can really see the difference between a regular maple G&L neck and the GOT neck on the SB-2:

The regular maple necks have a smooth satin finish, whereas I think the GOT ones have a glossy finish like the old Fenders.

funny! I tried an emerald blue sb-2 with birdseye maple board and would have bought it on the spot if it had a rosewood board..

I love the maple, the yellowing as they age and mellow is a great!

Just scored an '83 on Craiglist on New Year's Day: http://betruf.com/SW2Web
