Have been playing a 93 Fender Pbass for a bit now and have been dying to try out a G&L because of all the marvelous things i have been hearing about them. Low and behold, I am scouring cl and i find this one and ended up getting it. Neck looks surprisingly good, needs a new nut, the electronics apprently work fine( havent tried them out myself). Serial dates it back to 81. So now i have my 1st g&l and need to find some things out, like where can i get a new nut that'll fit this? think G&L would maybe send me a new nut if i contact them? Any other suggestions from you guys on how to get the most out of her would be welcome. Like what strings to put on her. either way, cannot wait to play this baby. Now on to the best part, PICS:

No need to get a nut from G&L, as they're pretty much standard stuff that a good tech should have on hand.

You'll have to have a new nut shaped and slotted.

Looks like some mahogany peeking thru the black paint?

If it were mine I'd disconnect the Bart, and return the elecs to stock.

Actually if that old Bart is still good, you could sell it to pay a techie for the new nut.

The pickup has large allen head polepieces and, assuming the pu is original, the bass would be from 1980.

sweet, think it would be better to take out the bart pickup and just rock it old school with just the mfd? And any suggestions about strings? Never tried flats, but im tempted to do it on her.

Nice score. if the Bart is already there, I say leave it there and disconnect it from the wiring, and put the wiring back to stock Wunkay.

Flat or round, nothing sounds bad on a Wunkay.

Good luck with the neck...My 1980 Wunkay had a hump in the middle and headstock lift...The action was horrible...Too bad someone routed it out for a bridge pickup...It doesn't need it...Great beater bass though!

the stock L1000 electronics are especially great sounding. the schematics can be found on the G&L website.
if you want to keep the J pickup functional, it would take some extra work. certainly the stock electronics have been buggered up to get the j pickup wired in.
as i starting point, i'd put it back to stock, and then figure a way to "properly" wire in the j pickup, if you just have to keep it...

Yea, I was debating just taking the bart out and having it as original as can be. I mean, do i really need the bart? I have heard so many good things regarding the og 1k sound. Gonna take her to my local tech friday and see what he thinks. Hopefully itll be fully setup soon, cant wait to jam around with it.

wouldn't be too hard for someone with good sawdust and paint skills to fill the j-route, and re-fin the body...maybe even just in that area...

Buy yourself a good sticker and cover up the J route...You don't need a J pickup on an L-1000...They're perfect...
